The most expensive mistake a luxury resort can make isn’t in its architecture—it’s in its copy.

A few years ago, I reviewed a brand strategy brief for a boutique resort property that spanned nearly forty pages.

It was meticulous. It contained exact square footage for the hydrotherapy circuits, technical specifications for custom treatment tables, thread counts for organic linens, and precise demographic profiles of high-net-worth travellers.

On paper, it was flawless.

When you read the resulting website copy, however, it sounded identical to every other luxury property within a five-hundred-mile radius. It was filled with polished, sterile vocabulary—sanctuary, oasis, bespoke restoration.

It had all the facts, but it possessed no soul.

This is the inherent limitation of the traditional agency brief. A document can capture what a property has, but it cannot capture what a property is.

A brief cannot capture:

  • The subtle shift in atmosphere when a guest crosses your threshold and leaves the noise of the outside world behind.

  • The unscripted warmth of an arrival greeting that makes a weary traveller feel immediately held.

  • The intuitive, split-second adjustment a practitioner makes because they noticed a client’s quiet hesitation.

When brand storytelling relies solely on an inventory of physical assets, a property is forced to compete on hardware. But discerning guests do not return for the hardware. They return for how the environment made them feel, and how seamlessly the human element held them throughout their stay.

The most powerful narratives in luxury wellness are never manufactured in a boardroom. They are witnessed on the floor.

If your written messaging feels slightly detached from the lived reality of your property, stop looking at the brief. Start observing the room. Look for the human thread—the micro-interactions, the quiet details, and the unwritten culture.

That is where your true positioning lives.
